DESCRIPTION:

The call to arms has come—the battle for Troy begins, in this second saga of Ancient GreeceIt has been 10 years since Odysseus and the warrior Eperitus joined the heroes of the age to compete for the hand of Helen of Sparta. Odysseus must use all his wits and cunning to hunt him down and persuade him to join their cause—for without Achilles, the gates of Troy will never fall.. Meanwhile Eperitus, frustrated at his quiet life, dreams of glory in battle. Settled in his small island kingdom, Odysseus wants nothing more than to rule Ithaca in peace. Helen of Sparta has been abducted by a prince of Troy and the hosts of ancient Greece are gathering, and as the greatest names flock to join the crusade, only Achilles is missing. When the lion-motifed sails of Agamemnon appear on the horizon, Odysseus knows that the time for peace is over and a time of war is beginning

"A fresh and exciting re-telling of the Iliad" according to A. Yiannakis. This is the third book in the series and I understand a fourth book is now available called "The Oracles of Troy". I read the first three twice and enjoyed them immensely. Illife is a very good writer and his renditions of the adventures of Odysseus at Troy make for a fascinating read. His books bring the story of the Iliad to life (and the events leading up to the war) and they are all real page turners. Anyone teaching the Iliad will do well to have his or her students read Iliffe's novels first, before embarking on Homer's Iliad itself.. "Great read. A perfect smattering of hand to hand" according to Lancerland. Great read. A perfect smattering of hand to hand action, adventure, and small doses of divine intervention. This complete series is a fun yarn to read, where the books tie in perfectly together. If you like reading about Greek military history, then you will enjoy Iliffe's books, its a nice break from strict military history, delving into a little fantasy as well.. Pierrot said These gates open slowly. This is a sequel, and many fall short of the original book. That having been said, I kept waiting for the pace to pick up, but it never did. I persevered through the whole book to no avail.
