"Gripping adventure story" according to W. Weinstein. You could be forgiven for thinking that this is yet another formulaic adventure story in the style of Alastair Maclean, Jack Higgins, Desmond Bagley, et al. Surprisingly however, Mr Innes has crafted a gripping tale of family honour, double-cross, exploration, romance and a terrific boardroom climax. The story sweeps from the stock markets of London to the remote reaches of the South China Sea, from dusty lawyer's offices in Thr. Hammond Innes' best book In the 1950's and 1960's, Hammond Innes had an amazing run, turning out a series of high quality books in his typically distinctive style. While in the adventure/thriller mould, his books were unconventional in focussing on "everyman" characters, strange environmental conditions, little-known locations, and highly original plots. `The Strode Venturer' is a near-perfect example of his work, and I personally regard it as his best . "Classic sea story" according to Alan Roberts. Hammond Innes in good form with exotic location and a book populated with interesting characters. Board room intrigues contrast with storms at sea and deserted islands. A great read and shows littel sign of being dated other than the subdued love interest

"Excellenthis expertise with volcanoes, avalanches, cave-ins and fire at sea is beyond question" Guardian "Here is one of the sheerly enjoyable reading experiences of the year" New York Times "Seamanship, storms, tension galore, money talk and a decent minimum of love - what more could one ask?" The Bookman magazine "Yes! A rip-roarerthose action sequences at which he is so brilliant, the equatorial heat, the bubbling sea-bed, an outworn ship and a drunken skipper - splendid!" Evening Standard

A thriller about a man who takes on the task of finding the 'black sheep' of a family of wealthy shipowners, and is plunged into a nightmare world where he must face the dangers of coral reefs, remote islands and financial warfare. From the author of ISVIK and TARGET ANTARCTICA.
