There's tragedy but also heroism and hope along the way. I thought the ending was great and fitting. I'm a little sad that the series has ended as I have found some of the characters inspirational and fascinating. Donaldson's style of sometimes too much self-reflection can be tedious during slow spots in the action, but it was fitting as the whole series came to it's climax. The series was primarily about Thomas Cove
